Hello Friends,

I am back with the updates of  sporting actions that took place in the first month of this brand new year in our segment Sports talk of the month. Beginning of 2023 has been quite exciting for the sporting world as numerous noteworthy performances  could be witnessed in this month. Germany's triumph in the hockey world cup, another Djokovic victory in Australian open, Sania mirza's retirement, continued dominance of Indian men's cricket team in white ball cricket & Indian triumph in inaugural U19 women's world T20 tournament were some of the major headlines of the month.

Great to see India hosting the Hockey world cup successfully with immense credit to Odisha government for making a smoother arrangement in the cities of Bhubaneswar & Rourkela for the global event. Even though it was heartbreaking to see India getting knocked out way before the finals, the overall standard of the matches was a treat to watch. If it was a great joy for Djokovic fans to see him winning his 22nd grand slam, it was an equally emotional moment for Sania Mirza fans to see her biding adieu to the sport she gave her all. Coming to the cricketing world it is never short of exciting action specially in the era of T20. Along with franchise T20 leagues being played in Australia, South Africa, UAE international white ball tournaments also kept entertaining us. Indian men's team dominated Sri Lanka & New Zealand in the white ball leg convincingly in the home conditions. Great to see Rohit & Virat getting their groove back in the one day matches which is vital for India's success in this year's world cup. At the same time the future generation of Indian cricket (Both men & women) impressed too. In another significant turnaround South Africa won the one day series against world champions England  to keep their hopes of automatic qualification  for the global event in India  this year alive. Among all these exciting sporting actions if we have to select one such sporting event this month which brought great joy & glory to the country,  that has to be our triumph in inaugural U19 women's world T20.

It has been a while now since a lot has been spoken about women's cricket in India. It's high time now that we start recognizing their efforts too. This victory is one of the memorable and critical one for quite a few reasons. This was India's first victory in any of the ICC tournaments for women. Coming from the future generation of Indian cricket in the challenging conditions of South Africa makes it even more special. I am sure this victory will give a lot of confidence to the senior women's team who will fight for the world T20 glory shortly in the same venue. There had been a lot of hard work done by the players, team management & cricket board together which has started giving fruitful results. This victory is definitely going to be a gamechanger for women's cricket in India as more participation from women can be expected. The determination shown by the team throughout the tournament as well as in the finals to beat the mighty English team was phenomenal. Shafali Verma & Richa Ghosh who are already part of the senior team have been the guiding force along with the likes of Shweta Sehrawat, Parshavi Chopra, Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi.  Launch of women's IPL this year is definitely going to write yet another significant chapter in the development of  Indian women's cricket. Hopefully the kind of success men's team has seen with IPL, the cricketing extravaganza for women will bring similar success in the near future.

That's all for this month. Stay tuned at this space  for more exciting sporting actions in the coming months.
