Emergence Of New Heroes

Since Gautam Gambhir has taken up the role of Indian men's head coach he has been trying  to make a shift in the approach of how we play our cricket.  He has been ruthless in instilling a culture of team first. If we look at the Australian teams over the years who have won more ICC titles than anybody else they have always emphasized on team goals rather than individual milestones. This year's T20 World cup will be remembered for India replicating a similar philosophy & style of play to win a global title.

One of the major factors behind India's victory was a fearless approach by the entire team irrespective of the match situation or opponent. There was no place for safe play or overthinking. Clarity of thought was evident from the outset. This was the result of a shift in mindset. New heroes were emerging game after game. Be it Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah or Varun Chakravarthy each & every member of this team stood up to the occasion. That's the sign of a true champion team.

Indian team hasn't produced the best of the results in test & ODI cricket in recent times. But in T20 cricket they have been a force for a while now. Post winning the 2024 T20 World cup Indian team has been a different unit altogether in the shortest format of the game. This is their third ICC title (Including Champions trophy in 2025) since 2024. Definitely this sort of dominating performance isn't a fluke. Lot of planning, hard work & brainstorming would have taken place  off the field. Finally it seems like  the long expected  result of conducting world's biggest T20 franchise league is here. A highly competitive tournament like IPL is another big factor behind producing such flamboyant players who can take on the world. Hopefully India can replicate this fearless approach in other formats too & produce equally effective results.

Team Of Leaders

When we look for leadership aspects in a championship winning team it's  not just about the captain or a coach. It's about how every individual is capable of taking certain responsibility at times. In India's case they had a fairly capable captain in Surya though his bat wasn't roaring the way it used to be in past. Gautam Gambhir as a coach so far has proved his mettle in the T20 format. Even the other members of the support staff were equally capable in terms of planning & helping players realize their true potential. But the test of true leadership doesn't come in the boardroom. Instead it comes on the field, during crunch moments. How a batter or bowler handles a tricky situation during the match and does his best keeping the interest of the team in mind is what true leadership is. That's where I believe Indian team did an excellent job compared to other teams.

Surya led from the front in the very first match of the league phase against the USA when his batting group failed miserably & showed how to handle tricky situations in a big tournament like this. We could notice similar maturity shown even by younger members of the team in the further matches. Ishan Kishan's knock against arch rivals Pakistan on a turning track was a real masterclass. Sanju Samson was the best example who despite playing under immense pressure to cement his place in the team played three match winning knocks including the ones in semi final & final. Similarly every individual took responsibility at some point during the tournament & showed the world what they are capable of.

It is fair to say that India turned up on the field with eleven champions game after game. Credit to the leadership group who could create such an environment where each player feels confident & can express themselves irrespective of the game situation. We noticed a similar trend during 2024 T20 World cup under the leadership of Rahul Dravid- Rohit Sharma. Great to see that Gambhir- Surya duo is taking that legacy forward & creating an exciting bunch of leaders for the future.

Phoenix Rising From the Ashes

No doubt that India had many heroes in the recently concluded T20 World cup. But this post won't be justified if we don't talk about one player who kind of rose from the ashes like a phoenix to excel at the big stage. Redemption of Sanju Samson is one of the biggest stories of this World cup. Last two years was a real roller-coaster ride for this talented  keeper batter from Kerala. From being the inform preferred opening batter he found himself totally sidelined just before the World cup. A rejuvenated Ishan Kishan took the opener's slot during the initial phase of the global tournament. But a moral damaging loss to South Africa & few questions surrounding the best combination for the team saw Samson coming back into the fold that also by regaining his preferred batting position at the top of the order. Since then it was no looking back for him. His fearless approach coupled with a calm demeanor helped him playing back to back match winning knocks & earning the player of the tournament award.

Samson's journey was a real testament to hard work & belief in one's ability. His honest confession about the help he received from great Sachin Tendulkar during his tough phase shows his humility. Samson was tipped to be one of the most talented youngsters & one for the future since the time he entered domestic cricket. Despite making his debut in Indian colors more than a decade back he could never cement his place in any of the formats. Over a period of time questions were raised whether he really has the potential to be one of the best or it's just media hype. His IPL career was also not that impressive till the time he took over the captaincy at Rajasthan Royals where he was groomed from a very young age.

Captain Samson proved to be a better batter too. Samson 2.0 drew attention from one & all for his calmness as a leader and flamboyance as a batter. His long association with Royals franchise played a big role  in him  becoming the player that he is today. It is also fair to say that at times captaining a team in a pressure tournament like IPL could bring the best out of him as an individual. Impressive show in IPL saw him getting another opportunity in Indian T20I team which he bagged with both hands by hitting three T20I centuries in 2024. Despite that it was not a smooth journey for him to be adjudged as the Player of the tournament in a World cup. Kind of setbacks he had to face all these years was tough on him no doubt. But it was his hard work, perseverance & faith on himself that paid off at the big stage. Sanju's story is a real lesson for many youngsters on how not to give up on your dreams & keep pushing till you achieve your goal. Sanju has a long way to go for sure. Upcoming IPL is yet another opportunity for him to raise the benchmark, this time in a yellow jersey.

That's all for now. Stay tuned for exciting updates from IPL soon at this space.
