Engaging Plot With An Interesting Title: Cold Cock By Mukul Ranjan

Hello Friends,

I was planning since last year to add new segments to my blogpost. Hence this year I should be able to bring lot more interesting contents for all of you. Today I am going to share my first post for the Book review on request segment. Surprisingly the book that I am going to review belongs to a category which I haven't explored earlier. Hence it was a challenge to pull it through appropriately. I am going to talk about Cold Cock, debut novel of author Mukul Ranjan.

First of all my heartiest congratulations to the author for all the effort that he has put across to write this book. Special mention for sharing a signed copy of the book. Let me be honest in this matter. Even while receiving the book also I was not very sure about how I will be able to write a review for the same as I have never been a follower of fiction work. But once I read the book It changed my opinion completely. There are  a few things which are quite appealing in the book. So here comes my view.

As far as author Mukul Ranjan is concerned he is a director and screen writer in Hindi movie industry. Mukul, a Master's degree holder in journalism has scripted and directed several movies, documentaries and TV shows. You can go through some of his other works in maverickyogi.wordpress.com. I am sure readers will definitely be able to find various aspects of Mukul the author in this book.

The story revolves around  various aspects (both the good and the not so good ones) of TV industry. Loved the beginning of the story which is no less than a plot of a typical commercial Bollywood movie. Slowly the story introduces various characters involved in it and the ultimate theme of launch of a regional TV channel with an interesting name Birha. Eventually the story focuses on an unusual yet appealing chemistry between two of the central characters named Ashwin & Mynah amidst all the chaos that takes place during the launch of the channel. Probably the sweet & sour encounters between the duo is one of the major factors readers will be glued till the end. Let me tell you not to skip the prologue and epilogue part of the book to miss out on the important part of the story.

There have been various characters involved in the story. All of them have their own roles to play. Special credit to the author for portraying two of the strong  female characters in an extremely emphatic manner in the form of Dakshina & Mynah. Various instances during the course of the story show how difficult it is for the women to create a space for them in the corporate world. An apt explanation of various cultural and behavioral aspects of Bihar shows the author's love for his hometown. Even though the central theme is quite simple and has been followed throughout, the storyline seems to get slowed down a bit at times. At some of the instances the narration suddenly takes a jump from one part of the story to another with no link between the two which might seem a bit confusing for the readers. Author has not held back while using some strong language during various instances which again matches the demand of the story. Author himself being from the entertainment industry has portrayed a clear image of pros and cons of working in TV industry.

I am sure most of the readers will be curious to know about the thought process behind the title of the book. Quite unusual title, isn't it?  Let me tell you that there is an interesting story behind the selection of the title (Click here for the full author interview to know the story behind title selection & some more interesting stuff). Design of the book is extremely simple yet catchy. Overall if I have to rate it ,I would consider it as a decent package of entertainment, interesting twists, livid characters & some very realistic instances that make the book worthy. Maybe it's time for Mukul to plan for a sequel with the existing characters coming together with some  more interesting twists and turns. If you are a fiction lover, go & grab a copy of Cold cock.
